Whoopie pies can be considered either a cookie, pie or cake. Mine turned out to be more like soft cookies. They have made their name all around the US but are predominantly found in New England. Maine to be exact. That state is famous for its whoopie pies, especially Wicked Whoopies. They have been featured on shows such as Oprah, Good Morning America, Food Network and Phantom Gourmet. Pretty legit. I don’t think my whoopie pies were worthy of national TV but they did win big at my house which is good enough for me.

I tasted both the “cookie” and the cream cheese filling separately and was very pleased with both. Once you make them into whoopie pies though, that is where I said WOW. I didn’t grow up in New England so I’m not embarrassed to say that I’ve never had a real whoopie pie. Until now that is. I am officially on the band-wagon. Why haven’t whoopie pies taken off in the baking world like cupcakes have?

The cream cheese filling is by far the best part of this little treat. I followed the recipe and got way more filling that I needed to complete the cookie sandwiches. I didn’t think I was too stingy with it! Now I need to figure out what to do with all that leftover frosting…

Andrea from Nummy Kitchen hosted this week so if you want the recipe, check out her blog.
You can see how the whoppie pies that my baker friends at Club: Baked made out here.
